Investigation into Deadly Incident An official inquiry is currently underway into the events preceding the attack by Axel Rudakubana, who was 17 years old at the time, on the date of the incident. In the attack, he murdered three young girls and tried to kill multiple minors and two adults. During proceedings, legal counsel outlined the scope of the investigation, which will explore the timeline and contacts Rudakubana had with multiple state systems, including law enforcement, schools, social care, and medical providers. Deliberate Nature of the Assault The inquiry heard that the attack was “deeply disturbing” and deliberately focused on women and girls. With the exception of one man injured during the event, every one of the remaining victims were girls or women. The representative referred to Rudakubana as a “heavy consumer of online content” and mentioned that the teenager had deleted his online activity prior to the incident. But, evidence showed he had used another device to search for videos of a knife attack by a young person in another country. Social Media Platforms Being Questioned The inquiry has requested information from tech firms Facebook/Instagram’s parent and X regarding the attacker’s usage on their platforms. It was revealed that the individual had probably viewed violent material on X shortly before the attack. “One could perhaps think it sobering and concerning that almost the final action the attacker did before carrying out these dreadful crimes was to look up and possibly view content on X in relation to a knife attack.” Weapons and Online Orders The inquiry will also look into how the attacker acquired items such as knives, projectile weapons, and large knives by posing as an older person and using a fake identity. Additionally, he ordered plant materials through an online retailer to create a basic form of ricin”. Authorities have requested comprehensive accounts from Rudakubana’s parents to determine their awareness of his internet purchases and the items he kept in his room and home. Ongoing Inquiry One key focus of the proceedings is to identify which organizations or entities were responsible for action to intervene given the warning signs the individual had demonstrated before the attack. The chair of the inquiry promised to do everything “within their power” to answer the questions of bereaved families and victims. The inquiry continues in the coming days.
