Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening trophy on 14 separate occasions.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after the French winger found the net early on.

However, the southern French side struck twice late to take a shock lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to seal a convincing shootout victory.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
