Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these medications need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
